It all began on Instagram for me. I was scrolling through the profile page of popular Ghanaian TV series, An African City when I came across the pictures of the set for one of the cast’s homes – Zainab’s apartment. It was gorgeous and the decor was a true representation of African aesthetics. The rooms looked very homely and being just a spectator didn’t hinder me from feeling the ambience. Well, of course, I secretly wished the apartment was mine.
Growing up, it was not everyday one could see a home beautifully decked out in African style. Most people were busy craving for North American decor and the latest imports from other parts of the world. However, this is beginning to change as we see more modernism in African interior design. This reminds me about the wave of African prints in fashion and how everyone is now in love with ankara or Dutch wax. I see the same type of thing happening for home decor as well.

Sade’s living room pops yellow against black.
Have you been watching episodes of An African City? My best room will have to Sade’s room simply because I’m a fan of the yellow and black combination. Which of the spaces above is your favourite?
